Bijoy Chowdhury on Documentary & Memory

Bijoy Chowdhury on Documentary & Memory

On 11th January 2026 at 3:00 PM, RAP Education Photography School will organize a special seminar featuring eminent photographer, documentary filmmaker, and author Mr. Bijoy Chowdhury, best known for his acclaimed photo-story book Kolkatar Chinepara. The session will be designed as an inspiring interaction for students and photography enthusiasts, offering a valuable opportunity to engage with a senior visual storyteller whose work spans decades. During the seminar, Mr. Chowdhury will share his journey in photography and documentary filmmaking, reflecting on how his visual language has evolved over time. He will speak about the challenges, discipline, and patience required to sustain a meaningful practice in documentary art. Emphasizing observation and empathy, he will highlight how a photographer must first become a sensitive listener before becoming a storyteller. A significant part of the session will be dedicated to his documentary films, where he will discuss themes of memory, urban transformation, solitude, and disappearing cultural landscapes. Through selected references, he will explain how documentary filmmaking demands long-term commitment and emotional honesty, often blurring the line between the personal and the universal. Mr. Chowdhury will also speak in depth about Kolkatar Chinepara, a project that took nearly twenty years to complete. He will narrate how repeated visits, trust-building with the community, and slow documentation helped him capture the fading life and culture of Kolkata’s Chinese settlement. The book, he will explain, is not merely a photo collection but a visual archive of shared histories, resilience, and loss. The seminar will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer session, where students will gain valuable insights into long-term projects, ethical storytelling, and the importance of perseverance. The event will reaffirm RAP Education Photography School’s commitment to nurturing thoughtful photographic practices and connecting students with influential voices in visual culture.
